Supercharging Battery Technology for Electric Vehicles

Challenges of designing ultra-fast-charging batteries

A challenge to electric vehicle battery design is the speed at which they must be charged. Fast charging is essential to electric vehicles, as it mimics the convenience of filling up a tank with fuel. The typical electric vehicle battery holds about 600 kWh, a large amount of energy. However, storing this much energy in an electrochemical device would weigh six tons. Lithium-ion batteries, the most common type of battery, produce an average of 150 watt-hours per kilogram. This is a far cry from the hundred-fold energy density in fossil fuels.

Another challenge faced by battery manufacturers is addressing the thermal management of the battery pack. The cells and the other components of an electric vehicle's battery must operate within a narrow temperature range, typically between 25 and 60 degrees Celsius. Thermal interface materials like BETAFORCE(tm) TC thermal conductive adhesives can make a battery assembly more durable and provide improved thermal stability. They can also provide uniform thermal conductivity from the battery cells to the EV's cooling system.

In addition to improving the performance of electric vehicles, battery manufacturers need to develop ultra-fast-charging batteries to remain competitive. Lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles must be recharged within 15 minutes or less, rather than taking hours. To meet this demand, Argonne National Laboratory is working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory to develop new fast-charging technologies. Fast charging of EV batteries can increase battery life, but it can also have safety risks.

Cost-effectiveness of ultra-fast-charging batteries

Ultra-fast charging solutions can add 60 miles to a car's range in only five minutes. They can also get 80% charged within 20-30 minutes. Ultra-fast charging solutions can be incredibly convenient, especially for electric vehicles that don't have the time to charge their batteries overnight.

In this model, the cost of a battery pack is estimated by multiplying the cost per kWh by the capacity of the battery, taking into account the space of the battery inside the vehicle, its positioning, and the other costs that are influenced by its capacity. The first factor in the cost function represents the cost trend as a function of battery capacity. However, this trend is not completely linear. As the battery size increases, the payload inside the vehicle decreases.

For example, in Fig. 10, the charging system consists of a line-frequency transformer and a Cascade H Bridge multilevel converter. These are common components in all EVs and form the power interface between the dc bus and the integrated storage.

Quantum charging advantage in large-capacity batteries

The speed of charging EV batteries can be cut in half by quantum charging, a significant advantage compared to conventional methods. While charging a standard vehicle will take at least an hour, a typical EV can be charged in as little as nine seconds.

This advantage is measured by the quantum charging advantage ratio, and is based on a comparison of parallel and collective charging. In simple terms, quantum operation is a method of charging multiple cells at once. It is also referred to as global operation, or all-to-all coupling.

While most large-capacity EV batteries use liquid electrolytes, QuantumScape's batteries are solid-state, meaning they retain 80 percent of their capacity even after 800 charging cycles. Furthermore, unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, the QuantumScape batteries are noncombustible and last for hundreds of thousands of miles. This new technology will be particularly relevant to the auto industry, which is shifting away from combustion engines to battery-powered propulsion.

The QuantumScape batteries have a maximum charging speed of 15 minutes. This is significantly faster than conventional large-capacity batteries, and it enables charging at home or at a charging station in minutes instead of hours.
